Beyonce Shares Her Love For Frank Ocean, Kanye West

B shares how Jay-Z and his collaborators influenced her chart-topping 4.

Beyoncé has said that she was "inspired by every type of genre" of music while making 4. But in a recent interview, she spoke in detail about how husband Jay-Z and other hip-hop artists became sonic touchstones while she recorded her fourth solo album.

"Jay had a CD playing in the car one Sunday when we were driving to Brooklyn," she tells Complex about hearing Odd Future's Frank Ocean, who co-wrote the 4 track "I Miss You." "I noticed his tone, his arrangements, and his storytelling. I immediately reached out to him — literally the next morning. I asked him to fly to New York and work on my record."

She also chose to work with Kanye West (who eventually produced "Party") after she heard "Runaway," which she admits, made her cry. "The fact that he's belting out his pain, his confusion, and his anger, with no pre-written lyrics, was so moving," she explained of her husband's frequent collaborator. "He's singing his heart out for five minutes. He is so vulnerable. I love when an artist can be so honest."

Of course, B acknowledged the direct influence of Jay's own work too. "Jay's music is more than music. His lyrics have fathered generations," she told the magazine. "All that he has overcome gives millions so much hope. There are moments when I see his lips moving, and I can see lyrics floating above his head, and I think, 'Wow! How did I get so lucky to be able to witness this level of genius so closely?' "

Beyoncé released her album in a season dominated by strong female voices, but she doesn't want any part in conversations that pit her against other divas.

"There is room on this earth for many queens," she said. "I have an authentic, God-given talent, drive and longevity that will always separate me from everyone else. I've been fortunate to accomplish things that the younger generation of queens dream of accomplishing. I have no desire for anyone else's throne. I am very comfortable in the throne I've been building for the past 15 years.

"I just want my legacy to be great music," she later added. "Someone who was a risk taker and someone who had songs that struck conversation and emotion."

'Battleship' Trailer: The Five Key Scenes

We see a whole lot of Brooklyn Decker's skin and an alien ship, but blink and you'll miss Rihanna.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Universal Pictures

"Battleship" may be based on a board game, but the action flick's first trailer shows an influence far more cinematic than anything having to do with little plastic pegs and the faux-sinking of tiny seafaring vessels. The new footage, which Yahoo! premiered on Wednesday (July 27), begins like an ode to a "Blue Crush"-ish beach make-out movie, veers into "Armageddon"-esque father-vs.-daughter's-boyfriend antagonism, then explodes in an orgy of a couple dozen alien-invasion movie references.

Totally original, this one ain't. But it's also pretty damn entertaining, and we really are looking forward to checking out the madness when it hits theaters on May 18, 2012. Until then, here are our picks for the five key "Battleship" trailer moments.

Brooklyn, Obviously
One of these days, Brooklyn Decker is going to get a movie role that doesn't require her to parade around a beach in a bikini. Or not. One thing is certain after checking out this footage and taking in her performance, such as it was, in Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It": Decker, the Sports Illustrated model, has been typecast. In "Battleship," she finds herself in the middle of one of cinema's oldest relationship pickles: in love with a bad boy whom her dad can't freaking stand. Clearly the relationship between the boy (a naval officer played by Taylor Kitsch) and the daddy (Liam Neeson's no-nonsense admiral) will factor into the battle with these aliens. Let's just hope it doesn't become the emotional focus.

Don't Tread on Me
Everything in the Navy's military exercises in the big blue ocean seems to be going well until they encounter a hulking contraption submerged in the water. One unlucky dude (Kitsch) is sent out to touch base, literally, with the alien ship, unleashing a whole lot of extraterrestrial terror. The aliens, we'll soon learn, are here to utilize our oceans as a power source. This one shot raises a bunch of questions. Why are the ship's defenses activated by simple touch, rather than the proximity of the Navy? What kind of tech do the aliens possess that they can send a sort of shockwave that hurtles a man so far, so quickly? And what's inside the ship that we don't yet see?

What a Big Bubble You Have!
Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.

She Needs an Umbrella
"Battleship" marks Rihanna's big-screen debut. In the trailer, blink and you miss her. But she's there, standing up in a raft and looking wet as the alien craft flies overhead. She certainly looks freaked out. But we can't yet get a sense of her acting chops from this footage; and hey, we might not be able to even after this popcorn flick's credits roll. All we can say for now is she had a blast on the production. "Working with [director] Peter Berg is unbelievable," she told us last fall. "I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me."

Taking Flight
We have to say we're surprised how much of the alien ship we get to see in this first trailer. We see how it's a craft that can both plunge into the water and also take flight. We see how it can transform and shift and hover; quite a lot of control, those aliens have on this sucker. We see its cylinder-shaped weaponry. We see the front of the ship almost seems to have a face. So the question is: How much did filmmakers hold back? We haven't, for instance, seen the aliens themselves. With so many alien flicks hitting theaters each year, it's getting harder and harder to surprise audiences with those creatures. Can "Battleship" do it? Stay tuned.

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Kristen Stewart Drops Out Of Transgender Indie 'K-11'

Film, directorial debut of Stewart's mother, will now feature her brother Cameron.
By Eric Ditzian

Any shot the public had at seeing Kristen Stewart playing a transsexual prisoner with autism is no more. We can't say we're surprised.

The "Twilight" star had long been involved with "K-11," the indie film about a rather unusual family that is set to be the directorial debut of Stewart's mother, Jules. But Variety now reports that as "K-11" finally moves forward after years in development, Bella Swan herself will not be involved in the production.

Stewart's departure marks the second "Twilight" actress to bow out of "K-11": Last year, Nikki Reed dropped out of the film, which both actresses had been involved with since at least 2008. MTV News broke the story on the project that November, when Reed kicked us word of the flick. "It's about a little-known section of the men's county jail," she said at the time. "I'm playing a man, and Kristen's playing a boy."

Though her daughter is no longer part of "K-11," which began filming earlier this month, Jules Stewart will be keeping the project in the family, as Kristen's older brother, Cameron, will be making his feature film debut in the film. He'll be joined by Goran Visnjic ("ER"), D.B. Sweeney ("Hard Ball") and Portia Doubleday ("Youth in Revolt").

In March of last year, before she had wrapped work on the "Twilight" series and signed up for Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman," the actress was still hoping to take part in "K-11."

"Yeah, totally," Stewart told MTV News at the time. "It's just one of those things where you try and get a movie off the ground that's small.

"I don't know [whether it will get made]. Like, right now it's harder [to get indie films made]," she added. "It just never got legs. I still really hope to do it."

Beyonce Debuts At #1 With 4

Big Sean, Selena Gomez and Scotty McCreery also debut in top 10.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Ian Gavan/Getty Images

There wasn't much question about whether Beyoncé's fourth solo effort, 4, would debut at the top of the Billboard 200 chart this week — it was just a matter of what the final tally would be.

Beyoncé does indeed top the chart with sales of 310,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. But that's about 172,000 less than the first-week tally for her last effort, 2006's double-disc smash, I Am ... Sasha Fierce, and marks the softest opening sales for the singer's solo albums to date (edging out her 2003 solo debut, Dangerously in Love, which moved 317,000).

Bey leads a parade of new faces in the top 10, including the debut from Kanye West protégé Big Sean, Finally Famous: The Album, which lands at #3 (87,000). Also new to the top 10: the latest from Selena Gomez & the Scene, When the Sun Goes Down (#4, 78,000); the second effort from former "American Idol" winner David Cook, This Loud Morning (#7, 46,000); and the debut EP from this year's "Idol" winner, Scotty McCreery, which hits #10 on sales of 40,000.

As for the rest of the top 10, Adele's 21 continues to defy expectations and recent music-industry logic by scooting up one spot to #2 on sales of 92,000 as her year-to-date figures pass the 2.5 million mark. After debuting at #1 last week, Jill Scott falls to #5 with The Light of the Sun, which was down 60 percent on sales of 55,000. Country singer Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party moves up four spots to #6 (48,000), "America's Got Talent" mini-opera diva Jackie Evancho falls four to #8 with Dream With Me (44,000) and the Eminem and Royce da 5'9" collabo, Hell: The Sequel, slips three spots to #9 (42,000).

While sensitive folkie Bon Iver takes a major 63 percent tumble to #11 (39,000) with his self-titled second album after a #2 debut last week, it is the steady decline of Lady Gaga's Born This Way that continues to make headlines. Even as U.K. breakout star Adele has managed to hover around the top five for most of the year and rack up the biggest figures to date for a 2011 release on the back of just one single ("Rolling in the Deep"), despite a string of singles and high-profile videos, Gaga's album has steadily faded after just six weeks.

This week marks its first outside the top 10, as Born This Way falls another four spots to #12, with sales dipping another 22 percent to 38,000 as total sales passed the 1.5 million mark.

Elsewhere on the charts, the all-star Buddy Holly tribute album, Rave on Buddy Holly, comes in at #15 (28,000), just ahead of the comeback attempt from 1990s nu-metal icons Limp Bizkit, Gold Cobra (#16, 27,000), and the self-titled album from a reunited Taking Back Sunday (#17, 27,000).

Country star Blake Shelton clearly benefited from his turn on the NBC hit reality singing program "The Voice," as his Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton rises 42 spots to #18 as sales ballooned by 182 percent to 25,000. Meanwhile, Maroon 5's latest, Hands All Over, also saw a bump thanks to singer Adam Levine's gig on "Voice," jumping 47 spots to #26 as sales went up 139 percent to 18,000. Judge Christina Aguilera saw a more modest uptick, with her 2008 greatest-hits album, Keeps Gettin' Better, re-entering the charts at #46 on sales of 12,000.

Fans also welcomed back beloved dusty folk singer Gillian Welch, whose first album in eight years, The Harrow & the Harvest, hits #20 (23,000).

Also charting: rapper Curren$y with Weekend at Burnie's (#22, 23,000), "Idol" season 10 runner-up Lauren Alaina with her debut EP (#24, 20,000) and third-place finisher Haley Reinhart with hers (#37, 14,000).

Over on the iTunes charts, Beyoncé rules the albums list, followed by Sean, Adele, Gomez, Shelton's greatest hits, Bon Iver, the resurgent Maroon 5, Cook, Eminem and Royce and Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More. In an indication of why her sales might be less than impressive, Bey doesn't have a single song on the iTunes singles chart, which is led by LMFAO's "Party Rock," which beats out Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass" and "Voice" winner Javier Colon's "Stitch by Stitch."

Adele holds on to the #6 slot with "Rolling in the Deep," with "Voice" runner-up Dia Frampton just behind with "Inventing Shadows." She is followed by Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight," Lil Wayne's "How to Love" and Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory."

With no major releases hitting stores this week, look for Beyoncé and Adele to duke it out for the top slot in the next cycle.

Soulja Boy Gives Louis Vuitton More Free Advertising On New EP

The obsession with designer brands has gone too far. Young rapper Soulja Boy's new mixtape the 'Bernard Arnault EP' isn't about a new dance like his mega hit 'Crank That,' instead it's an ode to the luxury brand Louis Vuitton. The mixtape was already downloaded 13,000 times since this weekend, Women's Wear Daily reports, but we can't grasp why. Maybe it's the brainwashing effect of the second track 'Louis Vuitton.' Listen for yourself.

Michelle Obama Embraces Being A Role Model

In a riveting White House interview in the September/October issue of AARP magazine, First Lady Michelle Obama and vice-presidential spouse Jill Biden open up about discovering alongside the rest of the world that the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks was dead, being role models and most importantly, supporting American military families.

On explaining the Osama bin Laden mission to her children: "I think kids instinctively feel the ambivalence - is this good or is this bad? And then you have to explain in a way that says it's not good, but it's good. The older kids, I think, get it. It's a convoluted set of concepts. But I think they understand when it's placed in context."

Jay-Z, Kanye West Announce Watch The Throne Release Date, Tour

Hip-hop duo is calling itself the Throne.
By Rob Markman

Throne watchers now have another date to focus on, this time an official one. It has finally been confirmed that on August 8, Jay-Z and Kanye West will release their highly anticipated joint LP, Watch the Throne, digitally on iTunes. Compact disc lovers will be able to purchase physical copies a few days later on August 12.

But when searching for the CD at local retail spots, fans shouldn't look under "J" for Jay or "W" for West, but rather "T," as the duo has officially christened their group the Throne.

Multiplatinum hip-hop supergroups cannot live by album sales alone, so on August 8 tickets for the Watch the Throne tour will also go on sale to the general public. The 24-date Live Nation-produced run will begin in Detroit on September 22 and wrap up on November 3 in Boston. Performing songs from the Throne album, as well as solo cuts from their respective catalogs, the duo will stop for two dates in Kanye's hometown of Chicago, but none in Jay's native New York. Instead the tour will hit the nearby East Rutherford, New Jersey, Izod Center on September 27 and 28.

Starting July 28, fans who visit the Live Nation website will have access to pre-sale tickets; the next day, July 29, Citi Card members will get their chance to snatch up early seats.

A press release sent out by Hov's camp also confirms an official 12-song track list, with four bonus tracks slated for the LP's deluxe version. RZA, the Neptunes and Kanye himself all contribute to the production side of things, while Beyoncé, Frank Ocean and Mr Hudson make guest appearances. There is a sampled posthumous performance from 1960s soul singer Otis Redding on the aptly titled "Otis."

The previously released "H.A.M." doesn't appear on the album proper but instead is earmarked as a Watch the Throne bonus on the deluxe version.

Watch the Throne tour dates:

VOLCOM Spring 2012 Fashion Show

imageLast weekend was Volcom's Spring 2012 Fashion Show, here in the LA area.

Pairing up with ELLE magazine for this exciting event, the show was the perfect summer fare with outdoor space, delicious cocktails, hot models clad in bikinis and a special capsule collection by POSSO, who also provided the music.

Bikini clad models slinked down the runway in classic silhouettes that boasted sexy details, like cut-outs and straps, that lent the timeless shape a futuristic feel. Versatile blacks and tans were punched up with bold, bright colors and intriguing earth tones.

The POSSO capsule collection was a collaboration between bffs, Marylouise Pels and Vanessa Giovacchini, and was a completely unique, yet wearable collection of quintessential California style with a hint of nonchalant rebellion. Many of the pieces went easily from day to night and meshed with the Volcom style well.

We can't wait for Volcom??s Spring 2012 Swim and Posso collaboration to hit stores in November! Get a sneak peek of this fun event and some of our fave pieces by clicking on the slideshow!

Miley Cyrus? Marine Corps Ball Invitation: Ignored?

This is getting out of hand. Miley Cyrus? Marine Corps Ball invite was sent via Youtube late this week ? but did she totally ignore it? It all seemingly started with a Marine who decided to invite former That 70?s Show star Mila Kunis, who actually agreed to go. From there, another invite went out to a celebrity, but this time it was for Betty White. It was not a joke or prank, a Marine named Ray Lewis apparently genuinely wants her to attend with him. Too bad for him, because she actually declined. Taking a queue from Betty, it looks like Miley might snub the guy who asked her as well. PFC Hart put together a nifty little video invite for the young singer, which fittingly includes clips of her song ?Party In The USA.? The only problem is that so far, there is absolutely no word from Miley or her people. Sure, we could be jumping the gun here, but normally there would at least be some sort of response in a situation like this. Yes, the press is terribly critical of her, myself included. There?s nothing more satisfying than making fun of her ridiculously nonsensical quotes, or [...]

Five Things You Need To Know Right Now

President & Mrs. Obama meet the royal couple

With the royal "wedding of the century" behind them, Prince William and his new bride, the former Kate Middleton, have assumed their rightful place in the pop culture landscape. While the couple has certainly captured our attention, we are just as intrigued by the supporting players who have emerged from the spectacle as bona fide media stars in their own right. (Harry! Pippa!) All of this is good news for royal watchers since William and Catherine aren't keen to live in the media fishbowl. Even when the royal lovebirds aren't front and center, there is always something interesting happening with their sexy siblings. And, of course, the upwardly mobile in-laws and those randy royals have been fascinating from the get-go.'s entertainment editor Diane Clehane will be reporting on all things royal for her new weekly column, The Royal Watch. This week's installment offers a crash course on the five most important things you need to know about the royals right now. Check out the countdown here:
